Small Steps - Prayer - Matthew 6
In Matthew chapter 6 we see that Jesus gives us, not a prayer, but a model for prayer. Leading up to this, He sets some qualifiers, if you will about prayer.
- Prayer should be done with HUMILITY. Vs. 2-6
- Prayer should have MEANING. Vs. 7
Too many times our prayer life consist of two prayers - a prayer of rescue or a 911 prayer. When life is closing in around us and we think our last alternative is, "God rescue me". The second prayer is just a formality prayer. It's the prayer before our breakfast, lunch or dinner. "God bless this food"
In verses 2-7, Jesus says that we can not bow before Him in prayer without humbling ourselves first. Then He says when we talk .. don't just use repetitious, empty words. Let's have a meaningful conversation!
Now the prayer itself needs to begin with Reverence and Adoration for the one we are praying too. Our FATHER - He has a name but is more than a name. Some of the names of God are: El, Eloah, Elohim, El Shaddai, Yahweh, Yahweh-Jireh, Yahweh-Rapha, Yahweh-Nissi, Yahweh-M'Kaddesh. His name is Mighty, His name is Powerful!
The next parts of the prayer are 2 fold. First, we are praying for our good. "Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done" - Give us the day ...
The second part is for our protection - Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. We need God to protect from this world and from ourselves.
Take a Small Step and talk to God today.
